Feeling the earth

Rice field in Meinong
Haven’t walked into an allotment or a farm or the countryside since I came back to this island, even there is a lot of greenery in the campus, most of the time I walk on the tarmac. The trip to Meinong, Kaohsiung reminded me the feeling of walking on the paths of the allotment, being surrounded by all sorts of plants, and picking fruits and vegetables by my own hands. I chatted with the lady farmer about her tomatoes, and she compared in details how the quality and taste changed this year due to the weather, which is a decisive factor to the success of her tomato farms. It is such a relationship with the nature that makes you realize that it is always in power, no matter how advanced human technology progress. Maybe that’s why the wisdom from the practices of traditional agriculture can be an interesting aspect to re-exam and to re-address today, because it is actually mixed with cultural and scientific values, which might lead us to a more sustainable way of production.
